Real Steal G-Slip vs. Luna

The G Slip was relaunched shortly after the Luna. So it is very close for us to compare it directly with the Luna.

One of the biggest differences is probably the titanium scales of the Luna. The G-slips is currently not available as titanium version.

Now to the similarities:
Both designers come from Poland, the Luna is a “Poltergeist Works” design.

Both are Slipjoint Folders.

Both knives have a so-called Long Pull, that is this long groove on the blade. A visually appealing and very long pulling nail carving.
With the G-slip the Long Pull runs on both sides of the blade.

Clip

Unlike the Luna, the G-slip comes with the simple and very popular deep carry wire clip.

Wire clips have the big advantage that you can bend them back again if they are overstretched.
If a clip now has more surface, such as milled titanium clips, they do not bend as easily as a thin wire clip.
But they break much easier if you want to bend it back.

The clip is convertible by the way. So from one scale side to the other. Which should be interesting for left-handers.

The Half Stop

The middle lock position is not exactly 90 degrees like in classic slipjoint.
It is located a little further “behind”, which makes opening and closing safer.

The Pivot Screw

Also interesting and not directly visible: the oversized pivot screw has no function and was added mainly for design reasons.

The actual pivot screw is much smaller and lies under the cover.

The Designer: Ostap Hel

The designer is the still quite young Pole Ostap Hel. I told him on Instagram about our blog or podcast and asked if he would like to tell me something about himself.

By the way, Ostap Hel is his real name, which I wasn’t aware of at first. Since he, in my opinion, does not sound typically Polish.
He was born in 1991 in Stettin, where he still lives today. Stettin is close to the German border and he even understands a little German.

Ostap has been drawing since childhood. Maybe it’s in the genes, his father has a degree from art school.

Already at the age of 2 years Ostap drew, as he says himself, a very nice concept drawing of a car on his parents’ television set.
And he did it with his mother’s lipstick. His parents were not so enthusiastic and removed the “masterpiece”.

Knives have interested him especially since his teenage years.  The medieval production of knives also impressed him early on.
He made his first knife at the age of 18 in his father’s workshop.
He also spent a year in an “Armor Shop” and learned the basics of medieval and traditional metalworking.

Since then he has been looking for ways and means to make things more reliable, repeatable and precise.

At the same time he completed his law studies. The topic of his master’s thesis was “Knives, knuckles and other dangerous items in Polish legislation”.
With the completion of his studies, he took the step into self-employment via his own workshop up to manual processing and use of modern CNC technology.

Ostap has an Instagram page where you can find his work. Especially his Mjolnir is very popular.

Currently, Ostap designs for several companies pocket knives, fixed and chef’s knives.
We will probably read or hear the name more often in the near future 🙂
